This wonderful mixed-media
vessel was made by Charles Navasie. The great-grandson of Paqua
Naha, Charles was born in 1965. He is also the grandson of Joy
Navasie, Frogwoman.
The proportions, finish, and
especially the painting are outstanding on this piece. This pot
has been made in the traditional way, from gathering, coiling,
hand-forming and painting the clay to firing outdoors.
Charles' decorations are inspired
from the Sikyatki ruins, and his work incorporates both the whiteware
technique of his forebears as well as the classic First Mesa
polychrome.
